OLD FORT, MALACCA AFTER TH PORTUGUESE CONQUERED MALACCA, THEY BUILT THE FORTRESS (A FARMOSA; PORTUGUESE FOR "THE FAMOUS") AT THE FOOT OF ST. PAUL HILL. IT WAS SUBSRQUENTLY DESTROYED BY THE DUTCH. TODAY ALL THAT REMAINS IS THE SANTIAGO GATE. DATE : c 1910 |
COAT OF ARMS, OLD FORT GATE, MALACCA THE DUTCH CAPTURED MALACCA FROM THE PORTUGUESEIN 1641. THEY RENOVATED THE SANTIAGO GATE; AT ITS TOP WAS PLACED A PLASTER RELIEF OF THE COST OF ARMS OF THE DUTCH UNITED EAST INDIA COMPANY. |
VIEW OF ST. PAUL'S HILLFROM THE PIER, MALACCA ST. PAUL CHURCH WAS BUILT UPON THE SITE OF A FORMER CHAPEL BUILT IN 1521 BY DUARTE COELHO, THE FOUNDER OF COCHIN CHINA (INDIA). HE DEDICATED IT TO "OUR LADY OF THE HILL" FOR WHAT HE REGARDED AS HIS MIRACULOUS ESCAPE FROM THE CORSAIR ATTACK IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA. |
CHANCEL OF ST. PAUL'S, MALACCA ST. PAUL'S CHURCH WAS A PLACE OF WORSHIPFRO THE CATHOLICS IN THE 16TH CENTURY. WHEN THE DUTCH CONQUERED MALACCA, THEY DESTROYED THE CHURCH. THIS BROMIDE PHOTOGRAPHIC SHOWS THE CHANCEL (NEAR THE ALTAR) OF THE CHURCH. DATE : c 1930 |
